Stanhope

Stanhope is a small agriculture-based town known for its cheese production.

In 2015, Stanhope became the first LEGENDAIRY capital of Australia, recognising the dairy industry’s contribution has made to the district. Check out the mural on Fonterra’s walls which collates thousands of local photos into an enchanting mural.

Stanhope’s famous son - Take the Stanhope Historical Walk and delve into local history. This self-guided tour highlights points of interest around the town, including the Sir John McEwen Park named after Stanhope’s famous son. McEwen took up a soldier settlement block in Stanhope prior to becoming a powerful figure in Federal Parliament, leading the Country Party and briefly becoming Prime Minister after the drowning of Harold Holt off Portsea in 1967. McEwan is honoured by a memorial bust in the centre of town.
