'MOAMA'
to change its name!
In what is an Australian first, the township of Moama will change its name to ‘Motown’ for the month of November 2010 in support of Movember - the non for profit organisation raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue.
The brainchild of Pete White from Echuca Moama Events, the name change will create a platform for local businesses and residents to assist in generating funds for causes that impact everyone.
Mayor of Murray Shire, Brian Sharp, said ‘We completely support this initiative and encourage the entire community to become involved. One in 5 Australian’s will experience depression at some stage in their lives. It is a very serious illness and as a result of drought, depression has been magnified within our immediate region and also regional Australia. Equally as important, around 20,000 men in Australia each year are diagnosed with prostate cancer.’
Movember spokesperson Rob Treharne commented ‘Movember is all about raising awareness and initiating discussion about men’s health issues. We’re thrilled that the community of Moama is getting behind the cause this year, and the cheeky name change, from Moama to Motown, is a fantastic show of support that’s bound to get the rest of Australia talking.’
Local businesses can get involved in many different ways. This can include a percentage of sales on a particular product being donated to Movember, a temporary name change of a business (from Moama to Motown), theming a shop front or sponsoring its staff, clients or customers.
